South Africans can get access to six streaming services offering sports content for less than the price of DStv Premium. However, they may be left wanting.
South African residents can subscribe to 6 streaming services offering sports content for less than the monthly cost of DStv Stream Premium.
These include Disney+, UFC Fight Pass, DAZN, NBA League Pass, F1 TV Pro, and the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC’s) SABC+ platform.
However, even with accounts on all 6 platforms, the combined offerings don’t hold a candle to the sports content available on DStv Premium.
DStv Premium’s extensive sports offering is one of its biggest drawcards, and people who want cheaper access to it have called for standalone SuperSport packages.
DStv’s explanation for not separating entertainment from sports content is that a sports-only product would not necessarily be cheaper than DStv Premium.
This was because sports rights are a major component of its content costs, and bundling them enabled MultiChoice to spread those costs across a wide subscriber base.
Currently, the full bouquet of SuperSport channels is limited to DStv Premium subscribers, who pay R979 per month for the decoder-based package or R799 for the streaming-only package.
While the price may seem high, it offers great value for money for sports fans. It gives customers access to 20 live SuperSport channels, with some dedicated to specific sports, and two ESPN channels.
The SuperSport channels included dedicated channels for football, cricket, golf, rugby, tennis, and motorsport, as well as several variety channels that broadcast popular live events.
MultiChoice previously told MyBroadband that DStv Premium gave users access to 50,000 hours of live coverage of 15,000 matches annually.
That included all English Premier League, Premier Soccer League, HSBC Sevens, tennis majors, F1 and Moto GP races, and Springbok and Proteas matches.
Since Canal+ took control of MultiChoice in September 2025 and concluded its acquisition in December 2025, more sports content has been added to lower-tier packages.
This included adding the SuperSport WWE channel to DStv Access and enabling customers across all DStv pay-TV tiers to watch all 2026 FIFA World Cup matches live during the tournament.
Previously, the cheapest plan on which all World Cup matches were broadcast live was DStv Compact, which currently costs R479 per month for the decoder package and R399 for the streaming-only package.
A MyBroadband analysis revealed that South African consumers can subscribe to 6 streaming services that offer sports content for less than the price of DStv Stream Premium.
We found that, while you can subscribe to several streaming services with sports content for under R799 per month, you will struggle to match the range of content DStv Premium offers.
The 6 platforms we compared included one free-to-view service: SABC+. It offers access to select live and on-demand sports content from South Africa and Africa, including some sub-licensed from SuperSport.
We also included Disney+, which, although not a dedicated sports streaming service, provided access to 2 live ESPN channels covering American sports, international soccer, and some rugby.
Disney+ added the 2 ESPN channels in South Africa in October 2025. Customers can subscribe to the streaming platform’s Premium plan for R179 per month.
Mixed martial arts (MMA) and boxing fans can subscribe to UFC Fight Pass Basic for $9.99 (R160) per month and DAZN for R149.99 per month.
UFC Fight Pass provides access to live and on-demand Ultimate Fighting Championship content, while DAZN covers boxing, American football, and soccer content.
Basketball fans in South Africa can get NBA League Pass for R139.99 per month, giving them access to live and on-demand NBA content from the US.
The final sports streaming platform we included was F1 TV Pro, offering access to live Formula 1 races and related content for R96 per month.
Altogether, these streaming subscriptions will cost R724.98 per month, which is only R74.02 per month cheaper than DStv Stream Premium.
However, they won’t provide subscribers access to all South African rugby and cricket matches, and also exclude content like golf, tennis, and athletics.
