Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) strategist Collins Magalasi has been sent to Maula Prison for two weeks pending a ruling on his bail application.
Senior Resident Magistrate Shukrani Kumbani made the order this afternoon when Magalasi appeared before the Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court.
Magalasi’s bail ruling was expected today, but instead the State brought fresh charges against him linked to transactions involving the Amaryllis Hotel.
He is facing charges of money laundering, theft and facilitating fraud, involving about K3 billion from the Public Service Pension Trust Fund.
The State has objected to Magalasi’s bail application, saying it needs more time to complete investigations.
His lawyer, Andy Kaonga, has opposed the State’s request, arguing that it is unreasonable, especially as the State maintains that it has strong evidence against his client.
Magalasi was initially arrested and charged with espionage. The State alleges that he facilitated the hacking of phone numbers belonging to President Peter Mutharika and other senior government officials.
He is also facing the corruption-related charges alongside former State Residences Chief of Staff Prince Kapondamgaga and six others.
For now, Magalasi will remain at Maula Prison for two weeks as he waits for the court’s decision on his bail application.
