Morocco police officer detained in Marrakech over suspected rape

Moroccan authorities have detained a police officer in Marrakech over allegations that he sexually assaulted a woman, the General Directorate of National Security said Monday.

The provincial judicial police opened a judicial investigation under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor after a woman filed a complaint alleging that she had been sexually assaulted by a man who claimed to be a police officer.

According to preliminary findings, investigators identified and arrested a police officer holding the rank of mokkadem, roughly equivalent to a police corporal, who is suspected of involvement in the case.

The officer was placed in police custody while investigators question him and examine the circumstances and background of the allegations, the security agency said.

Separately, Morocco’s director-general of national security and territorial surveillance ordered the officer’s temporary suspension from duty pending the outcome of the judicial investigation.

The security agency said any administrative sanctions provided for under Moroccan law would be considered based on the findings of the judicial proceedings.

The allegations have not been established in court.
