Malawi is one step closer to accessing power from the Southern African Power Pool after the completion of 400kV Mozambique-Malawi (MOMA) electricity Interconnector.
In a press statement, Ministry of Energy has confirmed that all construction works on the Mozambican side of the project have now been completed, including the 400kV transmission line from Matambo Substation in Mozambique to Phombeya Substation in Malawi.
During the commissioning process, 5MW of electricity was imported from Mozambique to test and commission commercial metering equipment at Matambo Substation, marking a key milestone toward operationalising the MOMA interconnector.
The Ministry indicated that construction on the Malawi side was completed in February 2025 as planned.
However, full commissioning was delayed due to outstanding works on the Mozambican side, including crossing the Zambezi River and works were temporarily suspended following a fatal workplace accident to allow for a review of safety measures.
The Ministry, in collaboration with the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM), Power Market Limited (PML), and Mozambique’s Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), is currently finalising discussions on tariffs and other arrangements required for commercial power trading.
Once tariff discussions are concluded, the Ministry is yet to announce the official commencement of commercial power trading and the launch of the MOMA interconnector.
