Cleric Calls For Accountability Over Abandoned Projects In Ondo
AI summary
Convener of Operation Rebuilding the Broken Walls and Hope Initiative, Apostle Paul Akinselure, has called for greater accountability in the execution of public projects in Nigeria,
his appeal followed the discovery of a deteriorating, abandoned building at the Irele Local Government Secretariat in Ondo State.
Akinselure expressed concern about the condition of the building, which, he said, was constructed recently, and questioned why contractors responsible for abandoned or poorly executed public projects were not being held accountable.
In a statement following his recent visit to Irele local government area, the cleric criticised the alleged waste of public funds on projects that were either abandoned or executed below standards.
He questioned the effectiveness of the contract-award process, arguing that contractors who received public funds should be held responsible for the quality and timely delivery of their projects.
According to him, abandoning public projects without consequences undermines development and encourages the continued waste of government resources.
Akinselure said roads and other infrastructure projects were sometimes awarded at high costs but left incomplete, while those responsible allegedly escaped sanctions.
The cleric also expressed concern over the attitude of some citizens who celebrate individuals despite questions surrounding their handling of public projects.
He warned that temporary financial benefits should not take precedence over the long-term development of communities, urging Nigerians to demand transparency from public officials and scrutinise the implementation of government projects.
Akinselure maintained that contractors who received public funds but failed to deliver projects in accordance with agreed specifications should be held responsible.
He said Nigeria’s development would remain difficult to achieve without effective accountability mechanisms to prevent the misuse of public resources.
The cleric called on relevant authorities and citizens to adopt a firmer stance against impunity in the execution of public projects, stressing that contractors should not be allowed to escape responsibility for abandoned or poorly executed projects.
