The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State has been hit by a leadership crisis following the resignation of its State Chairman, Venatius Ikem, Esq., who cited a crisis of direction and lack of leadership coherence in the party.
Ikem announced his resignation in a letter sighted by LEADERSHIP on Friday which was addressed to the PDP National Secretary at Wadata House, Abuja, and the State Secretary in Calabar.
“It is with a heavy heart and a deep sense of responsibility and commitment to the values I hold dear that I hereby resign my position as the State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Cross River State Chapter, with immediate effect,” he said.
He described the decision as exceptionally difficult, but necessary after careful reflection on the current realities of the party.
According to him, he could no longer effectively serve in the position under circumstances that increasingly challenge the principles, cohesion and sense of purpose that should define the party’s collective efforts.
Ikem said that as the party enters a critical electoral season, he found it increasingly difficult to reconcile his responsibilities as State Chairman with prevailing internal dynamics and divergent positions that continue to weaken the party’s ability to pursue a clear and united course.
“In my considered view, the party is presently grappling with a crisis of direction and leadership coherence.
These challenges have significantly diminished our effectiveness and, if left unaddressed, risk undermining the sacrifices, investments, and aspirations of many loyal members who have worked tirelessly for its success,” he stated.
Despite the crisis, Ikem expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have served the party over the past five years. He thanked Senator (Prof.) Sandy Onor and Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe for their encouragement and support, and acknowledged the immense contribution of the party’s National Leader, Chief Nyesom Wike, CON.
He also thanked supporters across the state, especially the people of Obudu, for their unwavering faith and loyalty, and said he remains committed to the progress, stability and development of Cross River State and the nation.
