Bank Zero Achieves Early Profitability in South Africa as Chairperson Michael Jordaan Outlines Lending Expansion

JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng — South Africa’s app-only digital bank, Bank Zero, has achieved profitability earlier than anticipated, setting the stage for a strategic expansion into lending and foreign-exchange services. According to Bank Zero chairperson Michael Jordaan, the institution’s lean operational model and innovative technology have driven this financial milestone ahead of its original December target, positioning the bank favorably for its planned R1.1 billion acquisition by Lesaka Technologies.

The financial institution currently serves approximately 275,000 customers, a demographic that includes high-net-worth individuals and business entities. Holding roughly R860 million in deposits, the bank plans to utilize these funds, alongside potential future funding from Lesaka Technologies, to support its forthcoming lending operations pending regulatory approval.

Speaking on the drivers behind this positive financial trajectory, Jordaan highlighted a twofold success formula. First, modern technology has enabled the construction of a fully integrated payment system that offers free transactional banking, eliminating monthly fees and charges for electronic transfers. Second, the bank’s focus on consumer protection has been paramount, with robust innovations successfully mitigating risks like card fraud and phishing.

Addressing the dynamics of the bank’s clientele amid challenging economic conditions, Jordaan noted that consumers are increasingly prioritizing value. He emphasized that average customers can save a significant amount through fee-free banking, a benefit that is even more pronounced in the business segment. Currently, 18% of Bank Zero’s organic customer base comprises business clients, ranging from sole proprietors to proprietary limited (PTY) companies.

While the entity is actively accommodating consumer affordability concerns, Jordaan clarified that Bank Zero currently operates strictly as a transactional and deposit-taking institution. He explained that the bank helps customers save and transact at a lower cost than competitors, rather than offering predetermined loans based on affordability metrics, as it is not yet in the lending business.

Despite slow GDP growth in both domestic and global markets, Jordaan expressed strong confidence in the company’s future growth. He pointed out that Bank Zero has managed to turn a profit with a relatively small customer base of 275,000, contrasting sharply with traditional big banks and other challenger neo-banks that required millions of users to reach the same milestone.

“We are proud to be small,” Jordaan stated, attributing the success to a low-cost base and a frugal team. He added that scaling this highly efficient platform with new customers will drive further profitability and allow the bank to deliver even greater value back to its users.
