Ilaro Division of the Ogun State Police Command has arrested one Adewale Ogoemi Arojah, the son of a prophet, for allegedly impersonating a renowned cleric on Facebook and defrauded unsuspecting members of the public to the tune of about ₦18 million.
The suspect allegedly used a duplicated Facebook profile bearing the cleric’s identity to offer fake prophecies, prayers and spiritual assistance to victims in Nigeria and abroad.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, in Eleweran, Abeokuta.
According to the police, the arrest followed a complaint lodged on October 3, 2026, by Muyiwa Akogun, popularly known on Facebook as “Prophet Dr. Muyiwa Akogun.”
Akogun had alerted the police to complaints from members of the public about fraudulent activities being carried out in his name through a cloned Facebook account.
Following the complaint, the Divisional Police Officer of Ilaro Division, reportedly deployed intelligence and detective operatives to track down the suspect.
The police said the suspect was eventually traced to a village in Ajegunle, along the Ilaro-Ibogun axis, where he was apprehended through intelligence-led operations and technological monitoring.
During interrogation, Arojah allegedly confessed to impersonating the cleric on Facebook. He reportedly admitted to using the prophet’s identity to issue fake prophecies and offer prayer services to unsuspecting individuals in exchange for money.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly targeted people seeking spiritual assistance through the cleric’s Facebook page, gained their trust and defrauded them of sums totalling more than ₦18 million.
The police said the suspect had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.
The investigation is expected to establish the full extent of the alleged fraud, identify possible accomplices and determine the appropriate charges for prosecution.
