Poultry Farmers Warn of At Least 15% Price Increase Ahead of Christmas

Consumers in Ghana could pay at least 15% more for poultry ahead of the Christmas season as farmers struggle with rising production and transportation costs.

The Greater Accra Poultry Farmers Association says producers can no longer absorb the mounting expenses, making price adjustments increasingly necessary.

According to the association’s Chief Executive, Mohammed Ali, the anticipated increases will coincide with the festive period, when demand for poultry typically rises.

Feed remains a major source of pressure, with prices of maize and soya continuing to climb. Higher costs for these essential ingredients are increasing the amount farmers spend to raise birds for the market.

Producers are also contending with expensive imported materials and medication. Rising freight and local transport charges have added to the financial strain, further pushing up the cost of production and distribution.

The projected increase could place additional pressure on household food budgets as families prepare for Christmas celebrations.

Beyond expenses at the farm level, Deputy Minister of Agriculture John Dumelo has highlighted the role of middlemen in raising retail prices. He said markups along the distribution chain frequently make locally produced chicken more expensive than imported alternatives.

The farmers’ warning points to pressure across both production and distribution, with consumers likely to face higher prices as festive demand gathers pace.
