The Ghana National Gas Company (Ghana Gas) is targeting the first quarter of 2027 to begin construction of a 278-kilometre onshore gas pipeline from Takoradi to Tema, subject to the necessary government approvals and completion of procurement processes.
The project is expected to improve gas transportation from Ghana’s western enclave to the eastern part of the country, reduce reliance on reverse-flow gas transportation through the West Africa Gas Pipeline and enhance gas supply to industries.
Richard Ernest Kirk, Head of Corporate Affairs at Ghana Gas, said the proposed pipeline would traverse the Western, Central, Eastern and Greater Accra regions, with planned offtake facilities allowing industries along the route to connect to gas supplies.
He said procurement preparations were underway, but the company was awaiting Commitment Authorisation from the Ministry of Finance before completing the process to select a contractor.
The company is targeting the conclusion of procurement by the end of 2026, ahead of the planned construction commencement in early 2027. Mr Kirk stressed that construction could not begin until the necessary approvals had been secured from the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Energy.
He explained that although a proposed route had been identified, technical assessments could result in changes to the alignment. “We have the proposed line where it is passing. But even the technical reports can twist the proposed line. So we cannot just jump the gun and start to engage the communities,” he said.
He assured that once the route was finalised and the required approvals obtained, Ghana Gas would extensively engage communities likely to be affected by the project before construction commenced. Separately, Mr Kirk said procurement for the company’s third compressor station was nearing completion, with a contract and vendor announcement expected soon.
The compressor station, together with the proposed Takoradi–Tema pipeline, forms part of Ghana Gas’s efforts to strengthen its gas transportation capacity and improve supply reliability for industrial consumers and other offtakers.
