Soweto Derby preview: Pirates vs Chiefs form, head-to-head

31 October marks another chapter in the fierce Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs rivalry.

The Soweto Derby clash takes place at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Here’s how Pirates and Chiefs compare heading into their clash in Johannesburg.

ORLANDO PIRATES Form guide, injury updates

The Buccaneers are currently on a three-game domestic and continental winning streak.

This includes victories over Namibia’s African Stars across both legs of the CAF Champions League preliminary round.

Pirates are also unbeaten in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) this season.

The only blemish on their recent record was the MTN8 final loss to Mamelodi Sundowns on 10 October.

As cited by the PSL website, Teboho Mokoena and Iqraam Rayners scored for Masandawana.

Pirates have been hit hard by injuries this season, with the likes of Evidence Makgopa and Thalente Mbatha yet to return.

Kamogelo Sebelebele is in doubt, and the club is also being cautious about Oswin Appollis, according to Soccer Laduma.

Kaizer Chiefs FORM guide, latest news

The Amakhosi are facing the possibility of another season with nothing to show for it.

Kaizer Chiefs are down to fifth in the PSL and out of the CAF Confederation Cup in the preliminary rounds.

On Friday, Chiefs were beaten 2-3 on penalties by Zambia’s Red Arrows, as reported by SuperSport.

This leaves them effectively chasing the Nedbank Cup and Carling Knockout Cup.

In the PSL, the Glamour Boys’ last win was against the struggling Siwelele at the beginning of September.

They have just three wins after eight games and are in danger of slipping into the mid-table.

It has also increased the pressure on coach Fernando da Cruz, who could be axed by the end of the year.

Head-to-head results and prediction

The last time the PSL giants met, they played to a 1-1 draw, as cited by News24.

Sebelebele and Mmodi Pule scored on either side in the second half of their clash in April 2026.

Before that game, Pirates had the better of recent derby clashes.

This includes the 3-0 away win in February 2026 and the 3-2 home win in March 2024.

Pirates remain on track in the PSL, trailing Sundowns by a single point.

They have also advanced to the group stage of the CAF Champions League, with the draw set for Wednesday.

Chiefs, meanwhile, have struggled for wins in domestic and continental competition.

While derby clashes are often unpredictable, Pirates clearly have the superior form.

Our prediction is a one-goal win for the Buccaneers, as their PSL title defence keeps rolling.

For Chiefs, it should be more points slipping through their fingers.
