Ninety minutes, not ninety posts: Tanzania clubs now face the real CAF test

DAR ES SALAAM: BRING the tea, dust off the good cup, and if you are Simba, perhaps add an extra spoonful of honey because seven goals over two legs are not collected from a supermarket shelf during your lunch break.

If you are Singida Black Stars, you may even be forgiven for planning meat for Sunday, actual meat, after that extraordinary 10–1 aggregate demolition of Al-Ghazala Wau.

Yanga supporters can settle into their chairs with satisfying sighs after surviving Gaborone United 3–2 on aggregate.

Azam, our distinguished gentlemen from Chamazi, were sipping cool drinks in the executive lounge, receiving a bye like lottery winners who did not even buy a ticket.

Tanzania therefore arrives at the CAF group stages with all four Mainland representatives still vertical, still breathing, still conscious.

And judging by social media, they are already measuring the living room for trophy display cases that probably won’t fit through the door.

And that, dear football congregation, is precisely where we must gently apply the brakes before the Taifa Stars bus, four club buses, approximately seventeen million online commentators and several prophets claiming divine visions all disappear together into a rather spectacular ditch.

Football is still played on a field, you see. By eleven men. Against eleven other men. For 90 minutes.

It has not yet been officially transferred to Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X, or those magical WhatsApp groups where one victory over a preliminary-round opponent somehow becomes scientific proof that the trophies are in the bag.

Spend half an hour browsing Tanzanian football social media, and you may genuinely conclude that CAF has cancelled the remaining competition and decided that Simba and Yanga should contest the Champions League final while Azam and Singida settle their personal differences in the Confederation Cup.

The excitement, however, is almost understandable because the opening numbers are genuinely handsome, if you squint and ignore the upcoming four rounds of football.

Simba waltzed into Malawi and humiliated Mighty Wanderers 1–0, then returned home to administer a 6–1 Sunday afternoon examination so thorough that someone probably checked for administrative errors.

Seven goals on aggregate. Singida Black Stars were even more extravagant, winning 7–1 away in a performance that would make any European coach weep with envy.

Then completed the paperwork with a tidy 3–0 at home for 10–1 overall. Yanga, displaying the restraint of diplomats, actually had to toil for their supper rather more carefully: Drawing 1–1 in Botswana before beating Gaborone United 2–1 at home.

Across those six matches, Tanzania’s three active clubs collected five wins and one draw, scored 20 goals and conceded only four.

Excellent numbers. Championship-calibre numbers. First-round numbers, let us underline this in red ink and then draw arrows around it: First-round numbers, not invitations to the finals. Now life begins.

This is where the tournament switches from “exhibition” to “examination,” and African football has a wicked sense of humour about such transitions.

Yanga’s next assignment is CFFA of Madagascar, the 2025/26 Malagasy champions, who dispatched Lesotho’s Lijabatho 3–1 on aggregate with the sort of competence that suggests they did not travel 2,000 kilometres to sightsee.

CFFA carry no glamorous continental resume, no Al Ahly dynasty, no Espérance pedigree, which is precisely why they are dangerous.

In African football, there is nothing quite so uncomfortable as being eliminated by a team your supporters had already classified as “manageable” at the WhatsApp group breakfast table.

So, Coach Manqoba Mngqithi, karibu to the actual examination room. Those first-round honeymoon photographs are lovely, the ambitions are genuinely impressive and Yanga’s domestic start has been strong.

But continental African football has a speciality: Taking beautifully constructed tactical plans and throwing them directly into a pothole somewhere between Antananarivo and Dar es Salaam, usually during the second half.

And that is precisely the sort of ominous warning that must echo through Yanga’s training sessions, because against stronger opposition, wasting five golden opportunities while converting only one is not called “dominating the midfield.” It is sometimes called “getting eliminated.”

Mngqithi himself has already complained about the missed chances against Gaborone United, just as fans and the Republic of Wachambuzi continue to complain about how to pronounce his name.

Few manage to slot in the famous ‘click’, while the rest are still wondering whether it applies to both his first name and surname Or whether one click is quite enough trouble for the tongue.

Anyway, across town, Coach Steve Barker can reasonably enjoy his tea after Simba’s emphatic disposal of Mighty Wanderers and Wednesday night’s 2–0 Mzizima derby victory over Azam at Chamazi.

But Barker also should not become too comfortable. Simba’s next Champions League opponent remains technically undecided, because 15 de Agosto of Equatorial Guinea must finish their delayed tie against Fomboni of Comoros on 3 October However, 15 de Agosto lead 4–0 after the first leg and are the reigning Equatorial Guinea champions.

Unless Fomboni produce the sort of comeback that would require a documentary, three witnesses and an investigation by CAF, that is the name Simba should be studying intently.

15 de Agosto also reached the second preliminary round of last season’s Confederation Cup before Stellenbosch stopped them.

Certainly, they are a respectable opposition, not tourists arriving to purchase carvings and photograph at the Tanzanite Bridge.

Then there is Florent Ibenge. And Azam. Their continental campaign begins directly against Egypt’s ZED FC, and anyone who sees the word “Egypt” in African club football should immediately put away the champagne and hide the congratulations banner.

ZED may be continental debutants, but they qualified as Egypt Cup runners-up and introduced themselves to CAF competition by dismantling ASAS Djibouti Telecom 4–0 before drawing in the return leg 1–1.

That is not a CV to discard casually. Coach Ibenge may wish to keep his seatbelt fastened… Finally, Singida’s Coach Papy Kimoto – Yes, Kimoto and not Kitimoto, silly.

Congratulations again on that 10–1 historical win. Ten goals in an African tie will make any coach walk into breakfast with shoulders noticeably wider.

But next comes Tusker FC of Kenya, who beat Sudan’s Al Ahli Wad Madani 3–2 on aggregate. Singida’s first-round fireworks were magnificent.

But fireworks have one critical weakness: They make plenty of noise and then disappear entirely. Against Tusker, Singida must now prove whether the sparks can remain switched on for 180 disciplined, determined minutes.

Which brings us lovingly, respectfully and with absolutely no diplomatic immunity to the great Republic of Wachambuzi…. That enormous independent nation of football analysts whose borders stretch from television studios to barber shops, YouTube channels, radio phone-ins and every smartphone capable of recording an enthusiastic voice note.

Our know-it-all Wachambuzi have an important responsibility this season, because Tanzania does not need cheerleaders disguised as analysts.

When a midfield is poor, say it plainly. When a striker misses four sitters, do not tell us his “movement was excellent.”

When a goalkeeper escapes punishment because the opponent hit the post, do not award him nine out of ten for “commanding his area.”

And when a Tanzanian side wins 6–1, analyse why it won 6–1, then dare to explain what a stronger opponent would have punished.

Genuine analysis is not betrayal. In fact, it may be the most patriotic service an analyst can offer this time around.

Fans are allowed to be gloriously, spectacularly unreasonable. Analysts are not. Coaches certainly are not. So yes, celebrate.

Simba were superb. Singida were ruthless. Yanga survived and Azam remain alive.

But there are still eight serious legs of football standing between those four clubs and those group-stage tickets. So, enjoy your Sunday tea, guys. Just do not engrave the trophies yet.
