**The Kano Emirate Council on Saturday staged its first-ever Maulud durbar to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). **
The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, led district heads and other title holders in the historic procession.
The durbar commenced in the evening from the emir’s palace at Gidan Rumfa, moved through Mandawari and Galadanci, before returning to the palace.
According to the emirate, the Maulud durbar will henceforth be observed annually on an agreed date.
Until now, the Maulud durbar, referred to as Hawan Sallar Gani, was exclusive to Gumel Emirate in Jigawa State and Daura Emirate in Katsina State, where it is held on the 12th of Rabi’ul Auwal, the Prophet’s birthday in the Islamic calendar.
Kano, however, traditionally commemorates Takutaha on the 19th of the month, when residents organise feasts, wear new clothes, and march in procession chanting praises of the Prophet, with some of them climbing the Dala Hill in the city.
