Yanga Fans Cut Cake After Firing Coach Manqoba Mngqithi — Joyful Scenes Shock Dar es Salaam

Cake, candles, and chanting broke out on the streets of Dar es Salaam this week after Yanga SC supporters learned the club had terminated the contract of head coach Manqoba Mngqithi, transforming what management framed as a routine football decision into a full street celebration.

Young Africans Sports Club officials confirmed the South African tactician’s departure on Tuesday, citing performance concerns after a turbulent domestic run that left the Tanzanian giants trailing their fierce rivals in the Mainland Premier League standings. Supporters who gathered near Benjamin Mkapa Stadium allegedly organised a spontaneous party within hours of the announcement, with video footage spreading rapidly across WhatsApp groups and X.

Club spokesperson Haji Manara told journalists that the decision came after thorough internal review, stressing that Yanga remains committed to silverware and would begin searching for a replacement without delay. SAPS had no involvement — the festivities drew no criminal attention — though local Tanzanian law enforcement monitored the crowd briefly before dispersing.

Mngqithi arrived at Yanga carrying substantial credibility, having steered Mamelodi Sundowns to back-to-back PSL championships before departing Chloorkop in late 2024. His appointment drew enormous excitement across East Africa, yet results never matched expectation; a string of draws against lower-table opposition eroded supporter patience faster than the technical staff anticipated.

One vendor near the stadium sold out an entire tray of cupcakes decorated with a crude drawing of a door — the universal symbol of dismissal — and spectators photographed themselves holding slices aloft while singing Kiswahili victory songs, treating the exit of a decorated continental-level mentor as though Yanga had just lifted a trophy.

Mngqithi himself has remained silent, posting nothing on his verified social media accounts since news of his exit broke, leaving thousands of PSL followers across South Africa wondering whether the former Masandawana architect will resurface at another club before the mid-season transfer window slams shut — and whether any dressing room on the continent will rush to hand him a second chance so soon after this very public, cake-fuelled farewell.
