Gordon’s Bay wildfire crosses City boundary as winds push fire closer

A wildfire burning in the Kogelbaai area has moved closer to Gordon’s Bay, with strong winds pushing the flames across the City of Cape Town’s municipal boundary on Friday afternoon, ***Cape {town} Etc ***reports.

The latest update, shared by JP Smith, comes as the City’s Fire & Rescue Service increases its readiness while crews monitor the fire’s movement.

Fire crosses into City boundary

An Incident Management Team (IMT5) was dispatched to the City’s boundary on Friday afternoon after the fire began burning in neighbouring Kogelbaai.

Strong winds have since driven the blaze towards Gordon’s Bay, and the fire has now crossed into the municipal boundary.

For firefighters, the terrain is creating an immediate challenge. The affected area remains inaccessible to firefighting crews at this stage, limiting their ability to reach the fire directly.

The City is instead using aerial monitoring to keep track of how the blaze is developing.

Drone unit deployed as teams prepare

The City’s Drone Unit has been deployed to provide aerial intelligence and monitor the fire’s movement.

Additional firefighting resources are also being moved into Strand so that they can be deployed if conditions require a larger response.

The City says its firefighting services are prepared to respond as the situation changes.

This includes increased firefighting capacity, with additional water tankers available to support operations during larger terrain and mountain fires.

Strong winds remain a key concern

The movement of the fire highlights the difficulty of managing vegetation fires in steep and difficult-to-access areas, particularly when wind conditions can push flames towards new areas.

For now, firefighting teams are continuing to monitor the situation closely rather than sending crews into terrain that cannot safely be accessed.

The City says its teams will respond as conditions evolve, with resources positioned to support the firefighting operation if required.

Residents in and around Gordon’s Bay are therefore being kept informed as authorities continue tracking the fire and its direction.
