Proposed Tobacco Bill could impose E50 000 fines
EZULWINI – Tobacco farmers are being consulted on proposed legislation that could impose fines of up to E50 000 for breaches of public smoking restrictions.
The Ministry of Health is holding nationwide consultations on the Tobacco and Related Products Bill of 2026 at Bethel Court, Ezulwini.
Ntombifuthi Ginindza, from the ministry, said the proposed legislation seeks to strengthen tobacco control, close enforcement gaps and tighten restrictions on smoking in public places and the marketing of tobacco products.
The bill also seeks to address emerging nicotine products and protect young people from addiction by introducing measures to curb youth-oriented marketing.
Ginindza emphasised the importance of public participation in shaping the proposed legislation, saying consultations were intended to capture different perspectives while prioritising public health.
“We must ensure that every voice is captured and that the path we take reflects a balanced approach to safeguarding public health while considering all perspectives,” she said.
She urged all sectors of society to contribute to the consultations before the bill proceeds further through the legislative process.
