Ekurhuleni GBVF marchers hand memorandum to Kempton Park police
Ekurhuleni residents marched to Kempton Park police on Saturday, handing over a memorandum and calling for stronger policing against gender-based violence.
Residents demanding action against gender-based violence and femicide handed a memorandum to Kempton Park police on Saturday after marching from the Civic Centre, according to SABC News.
The completed handover marks the latest community response to the discovery of women’s bodies in Gauteng in recent months. Marchers called for a stronger police presence and sustained pressure on the authorities to improve safety.
In its report published at 13:39 SAST on 3 October, SABC said organiser Keamogetswe Masike urged residents to continue holding the government and police accountable rather than allow the campaign to lose momentum.
Pastor Paseka Motsoeneng, who joined the march, called for stronger community policing forums, street committees and patrol structures. He also urged closer cooperation between residents and police in tackling crime and violence against women.
Provincial response
In a separate report published on Friday, SAnews outlined additional support announced by Premier Panyaza Lesufi for Gauteng’s response to gender-based violence and femicide.
According to the South African Government News Agency, the province identified 10 police stations for priority support and said it would add 56 social workers. Lesufi also announced plans to deploy 1,022 GBV brigades across 122 high-risk police precincts.
Municipalities agreed to produce safety audits within seven days, covering hazards including broken streetlights, overgrown spaces, unsecured parks and unsafe routes. The province also said it was reviewing shelter buildings, staffing and funding needs.
Those commitments form part of Gauteng’s response to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s four-point plan, with an additional provincial focus on places of safety for survivors.
