If anybody thought Man Utd’s owners are too trigger-happy, they need to look at the challenge Ruben Amorim has been given to save his Milan job.
After crashing and burning at Man Utd and engineering an explosive exit, Ruben Amorim took charge of another sleeping giant at AC Milan.
He struck a huge blow to United in pre-season itself, and was doing fairly well in Italy despite people waiting for him to fail to feel vindicated.
That undercurrent of criticism, of vultures waiting to pounce on him, has come out of hiding after his latest result, as a tough challenge has him on the brink.
Ruben Amorim told to win against Inter to save his job
Before his latest game in Serie A, Amorim’s Milan were unbeaten in the league after eight games, winning five and drawing three, including some great results with attractive football.
There was a hiccup in midweek when they lost 3-0 to Bournemouth, probably giving the former Man Utd manager a feeling of deja vu, but in the league, he was doing better.
It all unravelled spectacularly in their recent game against Bologna as Milan lost 4-2 and nobody could argue against the fairness of that result.
A single loss like that sees Amorim’s side sit outside the Champions League places, two points off Como in fourth, and already seven behind joint leader Inter and Lazio (25 points).
It might be Milan’s first defeat in the league this season, but patience is already running out due to the manner of it, as evidenced by Tuttomercatoweb’s coverage of it.
The Italian outlet claims that the Milan derby up next has suddenly turned from a potential title-challenging game to a job-saving affair.
Milan finished fifth last season as well, so an improvement is needed this year, regardless of how much time Amorim has been in the dugout.
The outlet claims that a loss against Inter, leaving them ten points off the leader’s tally, will see Amorim come under intense pressure to keep his job.
A win will bring them right back into it as the gap will reduce to four points, but serious questions will be asked otherwise, especially because of what Bournemouth did to them in the mid-week.
Amorim’s Italy situation makes Man Utd look patient
In Italy, Amorim always seems one bad result away from the sacking talk resurfacing, which is in stark contrast to the patience afforded to him by Man Utd.
He oversaw a 15th-placed finish in his first season, lost in the Europa League final, and it took him almost a year to win back-to-back league games for the first time.
Still, the only reason why he was sacked was that he fell out with the board, who were willing to give him even more time to turn it around.
If he were to come even close to replicating his Man Utd record at Milan, he’d be sacked without a second thought, which makes United look extremely patient.
