Journalist slams Man united SuperStar after costly mistake in Man united draw with Tottenham

According to a report by TEAMtalk on October 6, 2026, Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has come under heavy criticism following his role in the club’s late collapse against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

The Argentine centre-back has been a regular starter under Michael Carrick this season, but United have struggled defensively and are yet to record a league clean sheet. Their latest disappointment came on Saturday when they surrendered a late advantage against 10-man Tottenham.

Dominic Solanke scored a stoppage-time equaliser after Martinez failed to deal with a cross into the penalty area. Rather than attempting to clear the ball, the defender focused on holding off the physically stronger striker. Solanke eventually overpowered Martinez and headed home from close range.

The incident prompted a sharp assessment from The Athletic journalist Adam Crafton, who argued that United should have sold the defender after the 2022 World Cup. Crafton also questioned the difference between Martinez’s self-confidence and the level of his performances on the pitch.

United have reportedly identified their defence as an area requiring significant investment in 2027, with at least three new signings being considered. The club are expected to strengthen at left-back and centre-back as they look to improve their defensive stability.

Martinez’s contract expires next summer, although United have the option to extend it by another year. A previous report from talkSPORT suggested the club intended to activate that clause to protect their investment, while remaining open to a sale if his performances and fitness become concerns.

With United winning only once in their first six league matches, Martinez will need to improve his performances as questions grow over his long-term future at Old Trafford.
