A Zimbabwean man living in the United Kingdom has been sentenced to three years in prison after driving the wrong way along the M1 motorway while under the influence of alcohol and cocaine. His dangerous drive ended in a head-on collision that left a motorcyclist with life-changing injuries.

The case involves Keith Muromba, 32, of Milliners Court in Luton, and was detailed by Hertfordshire Constabulary on 1 October 2026.

The collision happened at about 4.30am on 25 January 2026 near Watford in England.

According to Hertfordshire Constabulary, Muromba entered the M1 at Junction 5 while travelling in the wrong direction.

He continued for nearly a mile, with police saying he narrowly avoided several vehicles before eventually colliding head-on with a BMW and a motorcycle.

The 46-year-old motorcyclist suffered serious injuries, including a broken neck and a dissected artery.

He also required a neck brace for several weeks and has been unable to return to work.

Nine months after the crash, he was still experiencing pain and reduced mobility, according to the police account.

The BMW driver, aged 31, suffered minor injuries.

UK Court Hands Muromba Three-Year Sentence

Muromba was also injured in the crash and spent 10 days in hospital.

He was later charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drugs, failing to provide a specimen for analysis and having no insurance.

He pleaded guilty to all the offences at St Albans Crown Court.

On 24 September 2026, the UK court sentenced him to three years in prison. He was also disqualified from driving for 66 months.

Before he can legally drive again, Muromba will have to pass an extended driving test.

His Honour Judge Kainth described the circumstances of the offence as exceptionally serious, saying a catastrophic collision was not merely foreseeable but “highly likely”.

Police Warn About Drink And Drug Driving In UK

Detective Constable Boris Kahn, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Serious Collisions Investigation Unit, said Muromba’s decision to drive after consuming alcohol and drugs had severe consequences.

He said:

“His actions showed a complete disregard for the safety of others on a busy motorway and left an innocent motorcyclist with serious injuries that continue to affect every aspect of his life.”

Kahn added:

“A single decision can have life-changing consequences, not only for those who cause collisions, but for the innocent people whose lives are changed forever as a result.”

The case is particularly relevant to Zimbabweans living in the UK, where dangerous driving offences can result in prison sentences and lengthy driving bans.
