DStv launches new channel as major overhaul takes effect

DStv has added a new channel to its line-up as the pay-TV broadcaster rolls out its biggest package overhaul in two decades.

Called Wethu+, the new channel is aimed at bringing several types of viewing under one roof, from South African drama and reality shows to movies, children’s programmes and live football.

The channel is now available on DStv channel 163, replacing Mzansi Wethu, as reported by My Broadband.

Wethu+ brings together programming previously spread across Mzansi Wethu, Mzansi Bioskop and Mzansi Magic Music, while also introducing some international blockbuster movies and dubbed telenovelas.

One of the biggest additions is live football.

During the PSL season, viewers can watch two live PSL matches every weekend on channel 163, putting football alongside the channel’s entertainment offering rather than keeping the two separate.

What’s on DStv Wethu+?

The channel’s prime-time schedule includes a mix of established South African favourites and returning shows.

Viewers can expect programmes including Umhlaba Wezifiso S1 and Shaka iLembe S2, alongside new episodes of Homecoming S2, My Brother’s Keeper S2 and The River S6.

Wethu+ is also designed to cater to families during the day.

Its schedule includes children’s and educational programming, with Woza Matrics providing revision and exam-preparation content aimed at Matric learners.

The channel also includes daily news updates and a dedicated international movie slot, giving it a broader mix than its predecessor.

Importantly, Wethu+ is available from the DStv Starter package upwards, making the new channel accessible beyond the higher-tier bouquets.

DStv’s wider package changes

The launch of Wethu+ comes as part of a much bigger change to how DStv packages its content in South Africa.

The new package structure went live on 17 September 2026, with DStv introducing new options including a dedicated DStv Sports package and a Movies & Series bouquet.

As part of the transition, existing DStv Compact customers were moved to the dedicated DStv Sports package.

The streaming-only version remains priced at R399 per month.

Despite the new sports branding, the package still includes the entertainment content that was previously available to DStv Compact customers.

The overhaul marks a significant shift for DStv as it restructures its packages while also keeping some older plans available to existing subscribers under grandfathered arrangements.

For viewers, Wethu+ is one of the more visible changes: instead of choosing between separate channels for local entertainment, movies and music, DStv is bringing much of that content together on channel 163, with live PSL football now part of the mix.
