VETA insists it is not a refuge for academic failures

**DAR ES SALAAM: **THE Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA) Director General, Anthony Kasore has asked parents and guardians to stop portraying vocational training as an option for children who have failed in primary or secondary education.

Speaking to media outlets in Dar es Salaam today, September 4, 2026, the VETA Director General said society should instead recognise vocational education as a vital pathway for equipping young people with practical skills capable of enabling them to secure employment or create their own jobs.

According to the DG, the changing labour market demands has prompted the government to introduce a competence-based vocational education curriculum aimed at exposing children to practical skills and technical training at an early age.

“The labour market has changed, and we must ensure our young people acquire skills that match its demands,” Mr Kasore said.

Moreover, he urged parents and guardians to educate children about the opportunities available through vocational training rather than discouraging them from pursuing technical and practical careers.

“VETA remains one of the key institutions in preparing Tanzanians for the skills required to drive national development,” he said.

According to him, vocational training was not merely an alternative for those who had failed in conventional education, but an important avenue for producing skilled workers and entrepreneurs capable of responding to current and future economic needs.

He said expanding access to vocational education and changing public perceptions would therefore be critical to ensuring that more young Tanzanians acquire practical skills for employment and self-employment.
