Dr. Kwame Asante, a prominent Ghanaian health policy analyst, has issued a strong caution to President Nana Akufo-Addo regarding the arrival of the Chinese Navy Hospital Ship in Ghana on a medical mission. In a widely circulated Facebook post, Dr. Asante urged the President to extend the same vigilance applied to the US Health Compact to Ghanaian health data and medical activities. He warned that the geopolitical rivalry between the United States and China extends beyond economics into medical research advancements, cautioning that developing nations must remain alert to avoid their citizens being used as “laboratory animals.”
Dr. Asante expressed concern that upon the ship’s docking at Tema Port, no records indicate that medical officers from the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) boarded to conduct necessary tests on drugs to verify they meet Ghanaian standards. He insisted that such vigilance should be standard procedure, noting that this is not a conspiracy theory but a matter of national security. The analyst called on Ghana’s security apparatus to take decisive action, emphasizing that neither China nor the United States are true friends to Ghana, as their allegiance remains to their own citizens.
Citing historical precedents, Dr. Asante referenced the origins of HIV, SARS-CoV-2 (Coronavirus), Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (2003), and H5N1 Avian Flu (1997), claiming these viruses originated from Chinese laboratories before spreading globally. He argued that since superpowers are no longer permitted to establish satellite labs in African countries, they may be disguising such activities through humanitarian ships. He stressed that Ghana cannot afford to be associated with a novel virus and urged immediate precautionary measures.
The health analyst outlined three specific demands for President Akufo-Addo’s administration: first, Ghanaian medical officers must be involved in every activity aboard the ship to prevent strange injections from being administered to innocent Ghanaians; second, National Security must inspect and conduct necessary security protocols inside the vessel; and third, every Ghanaian receiving treatment must be placed under remote surveillance. Dr. Asante also referenced the importation of Changfang machines for illegal mining (galamsey) as evidence that trust should not be extended to Chinese operators in health matters.
Dr. Asante’s concerns have sparked debate about Ghana’s preparedness in handling international medical missions and protecting citizens’ health data. While the Chinese medical mission aims to provide humanitarian assistance, the analyst insists that national security should “take no prisoners” and that Ghana must prioritize the safety and privacy of its citizens above diplomatic considerations. The call for FDA involvement, security inspections, and post-treatment surveillance reflects growing anxieties about foreign influence in African health sectors and the need for transparent, accountable medical practices.
