Foden Scores Hat-trick As Man City Thrash AEK Athens 5–1 In Champions League
Manchester City delivered an emphatic performance to defeat AEK Athens 5–1 in the UEFA Champions League league phase, with Phil Foden scoring a hat-trick to inspire the English champions to victory.
Foden struck three times, while Ethan Anderson and Rayan Cherki also found the net as City turned in a dominant display after taking a two-goal lead into half-time.
The victory underlined City’s attacking strength as they continued their campaign in Europe’s premier club competition, with Foden proving the standout performer in a match that saw the hosts score five goals.
City took the lead in the 12th minute through Anderson, who finished to give the home side an early advantage and settle them into the contest.
Foden doubled City’s lead in the 34th minute, converting a pass from Rico Lewis to put the hosts firmly in control before the break.
AEK Athens struggled to contain City’s attacking movement in the opening half, going into the interval trailing 2–0 and facing the task of finding a way back into the match.
The visitors briefly revived their hopes seven minutes after the restart when S. Pilios scored in the 52nd minute, reducing the deficit to 2–1.
However, City’s response was swift. Cherki restored the two-goal cushion in the 57th minute, finishing a move created by Foden to make it 3–1.
City extended their advantage further in the 65th minute when Foden scored his second goal of the night, again benefiting from Lewis’s creativity to put the hosts 4–1 ahead.
The England international completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute, converting a pass from R. McAidoo to round off City’s five-goal display and cap an outstanding individual performance.
Foden’s three goals highlighted his importance to City’s attacking play, while Lewis also made a significant contribution by providing two assists.
Although AEK managed to get on the scoresheet early in the second half, they were unable to sustain their challenge as City took control and punished defensive lapses.
The result provided City with a convincing Champions League victory, with their five goals demonstrating the depth of their attacking threat.
For AEK Athens, the heavy defeat exposed the difficulty of containing City’s movement and finishing over 90 minutes. Despite briefly reducing the deficit after the break, the Greek side could not prevent the hosts from pulling clear.
Foden’s hat-trick was the defining feature of the encounter, as City finished with a four-goal winning margin to strengthen their position in the league phase.
