7 South African destinations for an action-packed day

South Africa’s diverse landscapes make it surprisingly easy to build days that combine nature, culture, wildlife, adventure and food. These seven destinations are ideal for travellers who like to keep moving, with each offering a different mix of experiences within easy reach of one another.

1. Oudtshoorn: Caves, ostriches and Karoo flavours

Oudtshoorn is one of the best places in South Africa for a day that keeps changing pace. Set between the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountains, the Klein Karoo town is known for its ostrich farms, dramatic landscapes and the Cango Caves.

Start your day at the Cango Caves, where guided tours take visitors into a network of ancient limestone chambers and formations.

The caves offer a completely different perspective on the Klein Karoo landscape and are one of South Africa’s best-known natural heritage attractions.

Meet an ostrich

Back above ground, turn your attention to the world’s largest bird.

Oudtshoorn is known as the ostrich capital of the world, and visiting an ostrich attraction gives you an opportunity to learn about the birds as well as the farming history that helped shape the region.

End with Karoo food

Finish the day with a meal showcasing Klein Karoo produce and flavours. Nearby De Rust also makes a worthwhile detour if you have more time.

2. Franschhoek: mountains, heritage and food

Franschhoek is usually associated with wine and fine dining, but there is plenty to do before settling down for lunch.

The valley combines mountains, outdoor activities, Huguenot heritage, galleries, restaurants and wine estates, making it easy to build a varied day.

Start with a mountain walk

Get outside first with a walk or hike around Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve.

The reserve provides a chance to experience the mountains and fynbos surrounding the valley before heading back towards the village. Outdoor activities in the area also include cycling, horse riding and paragliding.

Explore the town’s history

Next, head into Franschhoek and explore its Huguenot heritage.

The Huguenot Monument and surrounding historic sites provide a glimpse into the French Huguenot influence on the valley, while a walk along the village’s main road takes you past galleries, shops and restaurants.

Make lunch part of the adventure

Finish at one of the valley’s restaurants or wine estates. Franschhoek has everything from relaxed farm-style picnics to more elaborate lunches, often with mountain and vineyard views.

3. Hermanus: Whales, walking and coastal food

Hermanus is particularly good for a day outdoors. During whale season, you can begin with marine wildlife, spend the middle of the day exploring the town and finish with food overlooking the coast.

Southern right whales arrive in the area from around June, making the town one of South Africa’s best-known land-based whale-watching destinations.

Walk the cliff path

Start along the Hermanus Cliff Path, which stretches for about 12km along the coastline.

You do not need to walk the entire route. Choose a section and stop at the viewpoints to look across Walker Bay, keeping an eye out for whales during the season.

Discover the town’s character

After your coastal walk, explore Hermanus’s galleries, markets or museums.

The town has a strong art and cultural scene, alongside its history as a fishing and farming community.

Eat beside the coast

End the day with seafood or another local meal. Hermanus is part of the UNESCO Creative Cities network as a City of Gastronomy and has a food scene ranging from seafood restaurants to farm fare and local markets.

The combination: marine wildlife + walking + food and culture.

4. Stellenbosch: Gardens, heritage and adventure

Stellenbosch is another destination where there is much more to do than visit a wine estate.

The historic university town combines outdoor activities, gardens, heritage, art, food and wine, with many attractions close enough to build into a single day.

Start in the botanical gardens

Begin at Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden in the town centre.

The garden contains indigenous and exotic plants, shaded paths, streams and ponds, providing a quieter start before heading into the busier historic centre.

Walk through history

Continue into the old town and visit the Stellenbosch Village Museum or explore the historic streets on foot.

Stellenbosch is South Africa’s second-oldest town, and its Cape Dutch architecture, museums and galleries give the centre plenty of character.

Add some adrenaline

Instead of spending the whole afternoon at a wine estate, make the final part of the day active.

Jonkershoek offers hiking and outdoor adventures, while other options around Stellenbosch include cycling, ziplining and non-motorised scooter trails. You can then finish with a meal or wine tasting at one of the area’s estates.
