Mare Nostrum Maintain Perfect Away Record

Torrevieja side secure a 26–24 victory in Toledo to record their third consecutive away win

Club Balonmano Mare Nostrum Torrevieja maintained their unbeaten away record with a hard-fought 26–24 victory over Fibritel Balonmano Villafranca on Saturday.

The fifth-round Primera Nacional fixture took Torrevieja to Villafranca de los Caballeros in Toledo, where the hosts were still searching for their first points of the season. Mare Nostrum, meanwhile, arrived having already recorded away victories in Murcia and Algemesí.

Coach Aarón Álvarez’s side set out to use their greater strength and depth to wear down their opponents. Torrevieja’s quick counterattacks produced the opening goals and early advantages, supported by a solid defensive performance and several important saves from goalkeeper Chiqui.

The strategy paid dividends throughout the first half. Mare Nostrum gradually increased their lead as the contest progressed, with Villafranca beginning to show signs of fatigue during the closing stages of the period.

Torrevieja took full advantage and went into the dressing room five goals ahead at 16–11.

The second half developed into a more evenly balanced contest, although Mare Nostrum initially remained in control. They restored their five-goal advantage midway through the half, leading 23–18 after 45 minutes and appearing to have the match firmly within their grasp.

However, a drop in intensity allowed Villafranca back into the contest. The home side steadily reduced the deficit and completed their comeback with just 90 seconds remaining, levelling the score at 24–24.

Mare Nostrum responded when it mattered most. A costly Villafranca turnover helped Torrevieja regain the initiative before Trino scored the final goal to seal a dramatic 26–24 victory.

The result leaves Mare Nostrum seventh in the table with six points from five matches. All three of their victories this season have come away from home.

Torrevieja will now attempt to secure their first home win when they face Balonmano Elda Centro Excursionista Eldense on Saturday, 24 October. The match begins at 6.30pm at the Cecilio Gallego Sports Hall.
