Morocco climbs 3 spots in 2026 Global Innovation Index

Morocco ranked 54th among the 139 economies evaluated in the 2026 Global Innovation Index (GII), furthering its upward trend of moving up 3 spots compared to the 2025 edition and 23 spots since 2021, announced the Moroccan Office for Industrial and Commercial Property (OMPIC).

Morocco also ranks 4th among lower-middle-income economies, OMPIC added in a press release.

The Kingdom stands out particularly in the intangible assets category, where it ranks 11th globally, moving up six spots from the previous edition, according to the same source.

This performance is driven in particular by Morocco’s 5th-place global ranking for design filings by origin relative to GDP, marking a one-place improvement compared to the 2025 edition.

The Kingdom also ranks 16th for trademark filings by origin relative to GDP, moving up six places from the previous edition.

In terms of patent filings by origin relative to GDP, Morocco ranks 58th globally, an improvement of four places compared to the previous edition.

The GII has been compiled since 2007 by the World Intellectual Property Organization, Cornell University, and INSEAD. It is a tool for measuring countries’ innovation capabilities and performance through a quantitative and qualitative analysis of 80 indicators covering the main aspects of innovation (Institutions, Human Capital and Research, Infrastructure, Business Sophistication, Knowledge and Technology Outputs, and Creativity Outputs).
