Livestream: Afi Agbenyo’s EC appointment, Obuasi SHTS abuse allegations, South Africa evacuation on Nnawɔtwe Yi

This week on Nnawɔtwe Yi, Abena Opokua Ahwenee and her panellists, will tackle three topical issues, beginning with the NPP’s call on President Mahama to revoke the appointment of Emelia Afi Agbenyo as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission. Ms Agbenyo and Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah were sworn in on Monday, October 12. The NPP says she campaigned for the NDC and cannot be seen as neutral, while the government has defended the appointment.
The panel will also discuss the alleged sexual abuse of students at Obuasi Senior High Technical School. The headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, has been interdicted following a JoyNews investigation, and the GES and the police are investigating. Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni says 16 students have made allegations, and Parliament’s Human Rights Committee has called for swift justice. The allegations remain subject to investigation.
The discussion will close with the evacuation of stranded Ghanaians from South Africa. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says the government spent GH¢49.7 million to evacuate 1,964 Ghanaians after the xenophobic attacks. The Minority says its own count of the publicly announced figures falls short of that number and is demanding documentary evidence.
