Liverpool produced a thrilling comeback to defeat Villarreal 4–3 in their UEFA Champions League league-phase encounter after recovering from a two-goal deficit at Anfield.
The Reds overturned a difficult start to claim victory in a pulsating contest that featured seven goals, with Alexis Mac Allister and Florian Wirtz among the scorers as Liverpool punished Villarreal for failing to protect their early advantage.
Villarreal made a dream start, taking the lead after just four minutes through Georges Mikautadze to put the hosts under immediate pressure.
The visitors continued to trouble Liverpool’s defence, with Alberto Moleiro and Santi Cardona involved in the attacking action before Cardona struck in the 29th minute to give Villarreal a commanding 2–0 advantage.
Liverpool, however, refused to surrender and began their fightback as the first half progressed.
Mac Allister pulled one back in the 41st minute, finishing a move created by Kostas Tsimikas to give the hosts renewed hope.
The momentum swung further in Liverpool’s favour in first-half stoppage time when Ronald Araújo scored an own goal in the 45+2nd minute, allowing the home side to draw level at 2–2 before the interval.
The equaliser transformed the contest, with Liverpool returning for the second half determined to complete their comeback.
Mac Allister struck again in the 65th minute, converting a chance created by Rio Ngumoha to put Liverpool ahead for the first time in the match.
Four minutes later, Wirtz extended the advantage to 4–2, finishing a move set up by Cody Gakpo as Liverpool appeared to have taken control of the encounter.
Villarreal refused to give up and reduced the deficit in the 87th minute through T. Oluwaseyi, who converted a chance created by A. Pérez to set up a tense finish.
Despite the late pressure, Liverpool held on to secure a memorable 4–3 victory.
The result underlined Liverpool’s attacking resilience, having recovered from two goals down to claim all three points in a fiercely contested Champions League fixture.
For Villarreal, the defeat will be particularly disappointing after their impressive opening spell and two-goal advantage, which ultimately proved insufficient against Liverpool’s second-half response.
The seven-goal encounter provided an entertaining chapter in the Champions League league phase, with Liverpool demonstrating their ability to respond under pressure and Villarreal left to rue their inability to maintain control after taking a commanding lead.
