Nevers Mumba Quits Politics as Zambia Watches His Next Move

Nevers Mumba has stepped away from active partisan politics, ending another chapter in his long political career.

The former Zambian vice-president resigned as president of the New Nation Party (NNP).

The party was rebranded from the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) in 2025.

Mumba also withdrew from the UPND Alliance Council of Presidents.

He said the decision followed consultations and what he described as a calling to serve Zambia differently.

Reuben Sambo will now serve as acting NNP president until the next party convention.

From party politics to a new chapter

Mumba stressed that his decision does not represent retirement from public service.

Instead, he intends to contribute through his experience as a former vice-president and statesman.

Reports have linked his next chapter to a diplomatic role in the United States.
