More than 80 deaf students in Savelugu receive practical robotics training by Untamed voices

More than 80 students of the Savelugu School for the Deaf in the Northern Region have received practical training in robotics and basic electronics as part of an initiative to expand access to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education for Deaf and hard-of-hearing young people.

The two-day programme, organised by youth-led non-profit Untamed Voices under its Deaf & Dynamic Initiative, introduced students to Arduino-based projects, alongside sessions on self-advocacy, breast cancer awareness and creative expression.

The initiative was implemented in partnership with FemAid360 and Golden Inspire Foundation, with the aim of providing students with practical skills and knowledge to support their education and future career opportunities.

On the second day, participants took part in hands-on STEM sessions, learning how to use Arduino kits to develop basic electronic projects.

The exercises introduced them to elements of engineering, electronics and coding, offering an opportunity to explore technology through practical activities.

Organisers said the sessions were a new experience for the participating students and teachers, but the students showed enthusiasm and interest in the activities.

Five students to receive continued STEM support

As part of efforts to sustain the programme beyond the two-day engagement, Untamed Voices plans to establish a STEM club at the school.

Five students identified for their interest and potential in the subject will also be enrolled in a longer-term support and mentorship programme.

Director of Untamed Voices, Vincent Yovo, said the initiative was designed to identify and nurture talent while creating opportunities for Deaf young people to participate in technology and innovation.

“Deaf students deserve equitable access to practical STEM education and opportunities to explore technology, engineering, and innovation,” he said.

He noted that access to hands-on learning and sustained technical mentorship remained limited in some educational settings.

The proposed STEM club is expected to give students an opportunity to build on the skills acquired during the programme through continued learning, experimentation and technical development.

Programme combines STEM, health education and personal development

The first day focused on self-advocacy and personal development, encouraging students to understand their needs, express themselves and build confidence.

Participants also received breast cancer awareness education and took part in screening activities facilitated through the partnership with Golden Inspire Foundation.

Art activities provided another opportunity for students to communicate their ideas, experiences and perspectives through creative expression.

Untamed Voices said the programme forms part of its broader efforts to expand opportunities for Deaf and hard-of-hearing young people through digital literacy, STEM education, leadership development and practical skills training.

The organisation hopes the initiative will help address gaps in access to technology and mentorship while supporting the participation of Deaf young people in education, employment, entrepreneurship and society.
