Experts warn against misuse of cetirizine amid social media craze

A shocking and hazardous health trend has recently taken over social media platforms, particularly X, where discussions surrounding the deliberate misuse of Cetirizine have gone viral.

Posts circulating online allege that inserting cetrizine - a popular oral antihistamine – into a woman’s private parts can dry out natural vaginal secretions, mimicking the sensation of tightness.

The trend, which began after various female X users touted the drug's supposed effectiveness, is now said to have gained enough traction to trigger noticeable shifts in local markets, with reports indicating that panic buying and heightened demand in Nairobi have caused prices to triple alongside local pharmacy shortages.

Medical professionals and pharmacists are now raising the alarm, urging the public to stop off-label vaginal insertion of allergy medications.

Cetirizine is a widely used second-generation antihistamine designed strictly for oral administration through tablets, chewables, or liquid syrup.

It works by selectively blocking H1 histamine receptors in the body, providing relief from seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, hay fever, and chronic hives by reducing systemic allergy responses and body secretions like nasal mucus and watery eyes.

It is engineered solely for gastrointestinal absorption when swallowed and was never designed, tested, or approved for topical or intravaginal application.

Experts have warned that the belief that drying out vaginal secretions creates actual structural tightness is a physiological misconception.

The vaginal wall relies on natural moisture and mucosal lubrication to maintain tissue elasticity, healthy friction balance, and microbiome protection.

In a past journal, Dr. Jen Gunter, a Canadian gynaecologist, wrote: "Inserting an oral antihistamine directly into the vaginal canal carries severe risks, starting with severe friction, tissue trauma, and micro-tears. Drying out the natural mucosal membrane deprives the vagina of essential lubrication, creating extreme friction during intercourse that leads to dyspareunia, epithelial tearing, and vaginal abrasions."

These micro-tears and lacerations, she said, destroy the protective physical barrier of the vaginal wall, creating open micro-wounds that significantly increase vulnerability to sexually transmitted infections, including HIV and Human Papillomavirus.

Furthermore, the vagina maintains a delicate acidic environment balance governed by Lactobacilli bacteria, and chemical irritation from binder ingredients in oral tablets can disrupt vaginal pH, creating an ideal breeding ground for bacterial vaginosis and severe yeast infections.

"Because oral tablets are non-sterile and do not dissolve properly inside the vaginal vault, an undissolved tablet can also act as a foreign body, triggering localized inflammation, contact dermatitis, chemical burns, or chronic mucosal ulcers," she said.

Health experts emphasize that natural wetness and lubrication are signs of a healthy, functioning reproductive system, and the vagina is a muscular canal composed of elastic tissue that naturally expands and contracts.

Forced dryness or dehydration does not equal tightness; it only causes stiffness and irritation without increasing muscular tone.

The interest in such remedies highlights a wider market for intimate wellness products, particularly those promising to improve vaginal tightness, eliminate odour or restore a woman’s reproductive health.

In Kenya, products such as vaginal tightening creams, herbal capsules, yoni pearls and intimate washes are among the items marketed to women seeking these results.

Some are sold with impressive promises, but the ingredients, safety and effectiveness of certain products remain questionable.
