Where We Come from Shapes Where We’re Going | Why understanding our heritage matters in the classroom

Heritage is easy to recognise in the things we can see, hear and taste: our languages, food, music, traditions and celebrations.

But it also lives in the stories we inherit, the places we come from and the memories, values and experiences passed from one generation to the next.

It is part of how we understand who we are.

And that is where heritage becomes part of the learning experience.

History changes when you can see yourself in it.

A date can be memorised. A name can be learnt for an exam. But when a learner discovers a connection to their country, community, language or heritage, the lesson becomes something more.

It becomes personal.

And when learning becomes personal, it starts to mean something.

That is what makes the current conversation around South Africa’s proposed new History curriculum especially relevant this Heritage Month.

The draft curriculum for Grades 4 to 12 points to a meaningful shift towards a more Afrocentric approach to history – one that gives greater prominence to African societies, knowledge systems and experiences while placing them within the wider global story.

It also aims to develop learners’ ability to think historically through enquiry, evidence, interpretation and critical engagement with the past.

Whatever the final curriculum looks like, the opportunity is significant.

For generations of young South Africans, history can become more than a record of what happened. It can become a way of understanding the ingenuity, resilience, movement, exchange and human stories that have shaped this country and continent.

It can remind learners that Africa has never existed on the margins of the world.

Its societies built kingdoms and cities, established trade networks, developed systems of knowledge and governance, and formed connections far beyond the continent.

Understanding those stories does not mean looking inward.

It means standing more firmly in where we come from so that we can look outward with greater confidence.

That matters in a country where almost 13.6 million learners attend ordinary public and independent schools.

That is millions of young people encountering ideas every day and trying to understand not only what they mean, but why they matter.

For us at Tutor Doctor South Africa, this is where heritage and learning come together.

Learning becomes more powerful when it feels relevant, familiar and connected to the world a learner knows.

A history lesson can come alive when a learner recognises a place, a story or a piece of themselves within it. The same is true when a mathematical problem connects to real life, literature reflects an emotion they know, or science explains something they have seen with their own eyes.

That is the power of making learning personal.

Personalised tutoring is not simply about helping a learner arrive at the right answer. It is about finding the connection that makes the learning click – the explanation, example, or conversation that turns information into understanding.

Because when something means something to us, we engage with it differently.

We question it. We remember it. We take pride in it. We want to know more.

Heritage Month gives us an opportunity to celebrate where we come from — not as something fixed in the past, but as something we carry forward.

Our stories give us roots.

Education gives us the confidence to grow beyond them.

And perhaps that is the greatest gift we can give the next generation: a strong sense of where they come from, and the belief that the world ahead of them is theirs to explore.
