Meet Kisumu Welder Making Coffins From Metal Instead of Wood

A Kisumu-based welder, identified as Otieno, has introduced a metallic coffin in an unusual business venture that has drawn mixed reactions.

Otieno says his idea is driven by creativity, innovation and the desire to explore new business opportunities.

He believes metal can be transformed into unique and valuable products, including items that are not commonly associated with welding.

He has clarified that his goal is not to delay decomposition but to introduce a new product to the market and make money through his company.

The metallic coffin has attracted different opinions, with some people viewing it as a creative business idea while others question its place in traditional burial practices.

Wooden coffins remain a familiar choice for many families in Kenya, making Otieno’s creation an unconventional alternative. His idea raises the question of whether families would be willing to embrace a different approach to funeral arrangements.

For Otieno, the project is an opportunity to apply his welding skills in a new way and turn an unconventional idea into a source of income. Rather than limiting himself to common metal products, he is exploring a different market for his work.

The introduction of the metallic coffin also shows the challenges entrepreneurs may face when bringing new products into an industry closely connected to culture, beliefs and family traditions.

While some people may appreciate the creativity behind the idea, others may be reluctant to consider a metal coffin for their loved ones. Its acceptance could depend on factors such as cost, design, practicality and public attitudes towards alternative burial products.

Otieno’s venture has brought attention to the possibilities available to skilled artisans who are willing to explore business ideas beyond conventional products.

Whether the metallic coffin gains wider acceptance or remains a niche product, the welder is seeking to turn his idea into a profitable venture.

The question is whether Kenyans will embrace the metallic coffin as a new business concept or continue to favour traditional wooden coffins.
