Niger miners’ deaths: Rights group flays forceful quelling of protesters

A non-profit organisation, Global Rights, has raised concerns over the development in Minna, Niger State, condemning the use of live ammunition to disperse protesters.

DAILY POST reports that emerging videos from Minna, the Niger State capital, show security operatives firing shots to disperse protesters.

The state was thrown into chaos after 37 alleged illegal miners died at a detention facility of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), a development that prompted massive protests in the state.

In a statement issued on Friday, Global Rights condemned the reported use of live ammunition by security forces during the ensuing protests.

The statement, posted on the official platforms of the rights group, said security agencies have a responsibility to maintain public order, but that responsibility must be exercised lawfully, proportionately and with full respect for the right to life and peaceful assembly.

“We remind all security services that their constitutional responsibility is to protect Nigerians, safeguard lives and property, and uphold the rule of law, not to escalate situations through excessive or unlawful force.

“We call for an immediate investigation into the reported use of live ammunition, full accountability where violations are established, and safeguards to ensure that grieving families and protesters can seek justice without intimidation or retaliation,” Global Rights said.

Meanwhile, the Niger State Government has declared a 24-hour curfew as part of measures to contain the escalating tension.
