Real Madrid Demand Javier Tebas Resign After Explosive Goebbels Propaganda Comparison
Real Madrid have demanded the immediate resignation of La Liga president Javier Tebas after he compared the club’s communications strategy to propaganda methods associated with Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Germany’s propaganda minister between 1933 and 1945.
The Spanish club described Tebas’s remarks as deeply offensive and unacceptable, arguing that his comments demonstrated a lack of neutrality and impartiality in his leadership of Spanish football.
In a statement, Real Madrid called on Tebas to step down from both his position as La Liga president and his role as vice-president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation.
Tebas Accuses Real Madrid of Promoting a Victim Narrative
The dispute began after Tebas accused Real Madrid’s management of coordinating media coverage to promote the club’s complaints about refereeing decisions and La Liga’s handling of competition-related matters.
In a social media post, the league president alleged that selected journalists acted as unofficial representatives of the club by repeating the grievances of senior officials.
Tebas also criticised Real Madrid TV, describing it as a central part of what he portrayed as a coordinated communications operation.
He argued that the club repeatedly highlighted incidents that supported its position, questioned decisions it considered unfavourable and directed criticism towards perceived opponents.
Tebas said the approach resembled propaganda techniques used by Goebbels, particularly the repetition of messages, the creation of an enemy and the presentation of facts to support a predetermined narrative.
He stressed that his comparison concerned propaganda methods rather than Nazi ideology or Real Madrid supporters.
Club Describes Remarks as Morally Repugnant
Real Madrid strongly rejected Tebas’s comments, describing the reference to Goebbels as morally repugnant and an exceptionally serious attack on the club, its management and its television channel.
The club argued that Tebas’s repeated criticism of Real Madrid was incompatible with the neutrality and respect expected from someone holding senior positions in Spanish football.
Real Madrid also accused the league president of targeting the club and those calling for greater transparency and reform in the sport.
The statement said his conduct had become a serious problem for Spanish football and insisted that his continued leadership was unacceptable.
The club consequently demanded his immediate departure from La Liga and the Royal Spanish Football Federation.
Negreira Case Adds to the Dispute
Real Madrid also expressed concern about Tebas’s reference to the ongoing Negreira case, which centres on payments made by Barcelona to a company belonging to former refereeing official José María Enríquez Negreira.
Earlier this month, Real Madrid submitted approximately 50,000 pages of evidence to European football governing body UEFA, accusing Barcelona of making improper payments to the former vice-president of Spain’s technical committee of referees.
The allegations concern payments totalling more than £7 million over approximately 17 years, beginning in 2001, while Negreira held his refereeing position.
Barcelona have repeatedly denied wrongdoing, maintaining that the payments were for scouting services and technical reports supplied through a company associated with Negreira. The controversy became public in 2023.
La Liga has said it could not investigate the alleged offences because too much time had passed. UEFA, however, opened its own investigation, which remains ongoing.
Long-Running Tensions Over Refereeing Decisions
The latest confrontation follows a series of disputes between Real Madrid and Tebas over refereeing, the administration of Spanish football and the club’s public criticism of league decisions.
Last month, Tebas accused Real Madrid of promoting what he described as a permanent conspiracy surrounding officiating.
Real Madrid have continued to question decisions made during recent matches, while the league president has criticised the club’s approach to raising those concerns.
The disagreement has also extended to Real Madrid’s wider criticism of the competition’s governance and its calls for changes within Spanish football.
Tebas Rejects Resignation Demand
Tebas responded to Real Madrid’s demand by renewing his criticism of the club and its media operations.
He said the club’s leadership had repeatedly called for his resignation over the past 13 years, including through complaints to Spain’s Sports Council and legal proceedings.
According to Tebas, the latest demand was another example of the longstanding conflict between the two sides.
He argued that independence in his role required him to defend La Liga against attacks, rather than remain silent when he believed the competition’s reputation was being damaged.
Tebas also accused Real Madrid of attempting to undermine the national competition through what he described as a distorted narrative promoted by the club’s media supporters.
He linked the dispute to Real Madrid’s opposition to the proposed European Super League, arguing that the club was pursuing through its media messaging what it had not achieved through that project.
The La Liga president maintained that defending the competition, including against criticism from Real Madrid’s leadership, was part of his responsibility.
