Digital transactions slow, consumers blame levies

Digital payments activities slowed in the first quarter of 2026, recording a 9.2 percent decline in transaction volumes and a 28.4 percent drop in value from the previous quarter.

The latest National Payments System (NPS) Report published by the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) shows that the country’s payment system processed 631.8 million transactions worth K52 trillion between January and March 2026.
