Ex-convict arrested for stealing two pigs in Zomba

Released from prison in February, Chifunilo Matumbi is back behind bars, this time accused of walking away with two pigs from his own village.

The alleged theft has left residents of Sitima Village, Traditional Authority Mlumbe in Zomba, stunned as police move to establish how the animals disappeared and where they were taken.

Deputy Public Relations Officer for Zomba Police Station Constable Andrew Mwale has confirmed about the arrest of Matumbi.

Mwale has said that the suspect was arrested on September 2, 2026, at around 22:00 hours, following information received by detectives of Chinamwali Police Unit that Matumbi was offering pigs for sale at suspiciously low price at Chinamwali Trading Centre.

Acting on the information, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), together with Community Policing personnel, conducted an operation that led to the arrest of the suspect.

He said that during interviews, Matumbi allegedly revealed that he had stolen the two pigs from Sitima Village.

The suspect is an ex-convict who was released from Zomba Maximum Prison in February 2026. Police have since identified the owner of the pigs.

Police in Zomba continue to advise members of the public to exercise caution when purchasing property, particularly livestock and other valuable items offered at unusually low prices. Members of the public are encouraged to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station to help prevent and combat crime.
