Women’s super league kicks off with fresh funding
The Namibia Football Association, in partnership with FNB Namibia, officially launched the 2026/27 FNB Women’s Super League season at FNB’s headquarters in Windhoek on Tuesday.
The launch marked the second year of a three-year sponsorship of N$9.3 million that FNB and the Namibia Football Association (NFA) signed last year.
The event is another significant milestone in the partnership between the two institutions, highlighting the importance of sustained investment in creating opportunities for woman footballers and strengthening the women’s game at both domestic and national level.
Speaking at the occasion, NFA vice president Jakobus Markus reflected on the significance of the launch, which coincides with the association’s 35th anniversary, celebrating more than three decades of resilience, progress and commitment to football development in Namibia.
Markus commended FNB Namibia for its continued investment in the Women’s Super League, acknowledging the bank’s contribution towards nurturing talent, improving competitiveness and providing a platform for female footballers to realise their potential.
He highlighted the positive impact of the partnership on the national women’s team, the Brave Gladiators, whose recent Cosafa Women’s Championship triumph stands as a testament to the progress being made in women’s football.
The achievement, he said, not only brought pride to the nation but also demonstrated what can be accomplished through meaningful collaboration between football authorities, the government and the private sector.
The occasion also provided an opportunity to reflect on the remarkable journey of women’s football in Namibia.
Markus acknowledged the contribution of NFA patron and prime minister Elijah Ngurare, recognising his commitment to youth development and his continued support for sport as a powerful tool for unity, empowerment and national development.
As part of its continued commitment to the league, FNB Namibia announced an additional N$111 000 in sponsorship funding to accommodate inflation, further reinforcing its dedication to the sustainable growth of women’s football.
The 2026/27 season will see 12 teams compete for domestic honours, with defending champions FC Ongos looking to retain their crown as the country’s premier women’s football competition prepares for another exciting campaign.
Beyond the competition for silverware, the FNB Women’s Super League remains a vital platform for identifying and developing talent, providing woman footballers with regular competitive opportunities while strengthening the foundation of the national women’s team.
The 2026/27 FNB Women’s Super League season is scheduled to kick off on 7 November.
