Spanish police have arrested a French man wanted by authorities in connection with the alleged kidnapping of two young women and the sexual assault of one of them in France in 2023.
The man was detained Aug. 29 at the Beni Enzar border crossing as he attempted to enter Melilla from Morocco, Spain’s National Police said.
Officers discovered an international arrest warrant seeking his extradition during a routine document check.
The warrant is linked to a French investigation into an alleged kidnapping in the eastern French town of Dole in October 2023. French authorities believe several people were involved in the incident, which they have linked to suspected extortion and drug trafficking.
According to Spanish police, the two women were allegedly held against their will and physically assaulted during their captivity. One of them was also allegedly sexually assaulted.
The investigation includes suspicions of membership in a criminal organization, with authorities examining possible links between the alleged offenses and drug trafficking.
The arrest came nearly three years after the alleged incident. French authorities have continued investigating the case and are seeking other people suspected of involvement. Several other suspects have already been arrested as part of the investigation.
Spanish police said the man was informed of the reasons for his detention and of his legal rights before being placed at the disposal of judicial authorities.
His extradition to France will be subject to the applicable judicial process. French authorities are expected to formally request his extradition, after which Spanish courts will determine the next steps.
