Police in Zomba have arrested 31-year-old Cassim Dausi for allegedly murdering a 59-year-old woman whose body was found hidden in a well.
Dausi was arrested during an intelligence-led operation involving officers from the Zomba Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Zomba Special Patrol Team.
Police say investigations have linked him to the death of Margret Sande of Bula Village, Traditional Authority Chikowi.
Sande went missing on July 4, 2026, prompting her son to report the matter at Chimwalira Police Unit.
Her whereabouts remained unknown for nearly seven weeks.
On August 23, her body was discovered at around 11am inside a well that had been concealed with grass.
Police say the body had been wrapped in a chitenje cloth and tied to a stone.
Zomba Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Andrew Mwale confirmed Dausi’s arrest.
Dausi, who was previously Sande’s son-in-law, remains in police custody and is assisting investigators with the case.
He is expected to appear in court once investigations are completed.
Dausi comes from Mbamba Village under Traditional Authority Mlumbe in Zomba District.
Police have thanked members of the public for providing information that has helped investigators make progress in the case.
They have also urged communities to continue sharing information that could help bring suspected offenders to justice.
