Oshikoto raises N$170 000 for Cuba
ONGWEDIVA – Oshikoto region has reaffirmed its support for the longstanding relationship between Namibia and Cuba, with governor Sacky Kathindi calling for continued solidarity towards the Cuban people.
Kathindi made the remarks earlier this week during the regional handover of mobilised funds to the Namibia-Cuba Friendship Association as part of the Namibia-Cuba Solidarity Campaign.
A total of N$170 000 was raised towards the campaign, which Kathindi said goes beyond a financial contribution, describing it as a demonstration of international friendship, mutual support and compassion for people facing challenges beyond Namibia’s borders.
“The relationship between Namibia and Cuba is one of the most enduring and cherished friendships in our nation’s history,” Kathindi said.
He highlighted Cuba’s support for Namibia during the country’s liberation struggle, saying that the Cuban government and people stood in solidarity with Namibians during difficult periods in the pursuit of justice, self-determination and independence.
According to Kathindi, the relationship also extended into Namibia’s development after independence, particularly in education, healthcare, skills development and human capacity building.
“Many Namibians benefited from educational opportunities and professional training in Cuba, while Cuban professionals contributed their expertise to development efforts in Namibia,” he said.
Kathindi further said that the funds handed over through the campaign would contribute towards humanitarian assistance for people in Cuba, including the provision of solar power kits and urgently needed medical supplies for healthcare facilities.
He said that such interventions could make a tangible difference in the lives of ordinary people and strengthen communities’ access to essential services.
Kathindi commended the Namibia-Cuba Friendship Association for spearheading the initiative and providing a platform for individuals, businesses, institutions and organisations to contribute to the campaign.
He also thanked those who had already contributed, noting that their generosity demonstrated that the spirit of Ubuntu and solidarity remained strong within Namibian communities.
Kathindi further encouraged individuals and organisations that had not yet contributed to consider supporting the campaign through financial contributions, advocacy or other forms of assistance.
“Every effort counts and every contribution strengthens the collective impact of this initiative,” he said.
