Tanzania release 20bn/-to compensate residents affected by expansion of JNIA Airport

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzanian government has released 20bn/-to continue compensation payments to residents of Kipunguni whose properties are affected by the expansion of Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA).

The latest allocation brings the total amount paid so far to TSh86 billion out of the TSh114 billion required to compensate all affected residents.

Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA) Director General Abdul Mombakaleo said the funds are part of the ongoing phased compensation programme, which will continue as additional funds become available.

So far, 717 affected residents have been compensated, while another 1,147 are still awaiting payment.

Speaking to journalists, Mombakaleo said TAA received the 20bn/-on September 22, 2026, and that payments under the latest phase would begin on Monday. He said the authority’s Director of Finance would provide details on the payment procedures.

“I would like to assure you that we have received 20bn/-and we will begin making payments on Monday. The Director of Finance will provide details of the payment procedures so that everyone can know the process and whether they are included in this phase or the next,” Mombakaleo said.

He also thanked residents of Kipunguni and other affected areas for their patience as the compensation exercise continues in phases.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the residents of Kipunguni and others who have chosen to remain patient as the exercise continues. We will make payments in phases. Everyone will be paid,” he said.

Meanwhile, TAA Director of Finance Mohamed Seif said the 20bn/- released would be paid to residents who have completed the required forms and complied with the established procedures.

Seif urged residents awaiting compensation to remain patient, saying the authority was working to ensure the payments are processed within a short period.

He said residents included on the payment list for the latest phase would receive compensation forms through their street chairpersons and local government authorities.

After completing the forms, beneficiaries will be required to submit them to banks for verification before returning them to TAA for further processing.

The compensation exercise is part of the planned expansion of Julius Nyerere International Airport, which requires residents in the affected areas to vacate their properties after completing the compensation process.
