SportPesa brings Kariakoo Derby to Segerea as Simba stage historic 2-1 comeback

DAR ES SALAAM: A SportPesa screening truck set up in Segerea gave supporters across the Dar es Salaam neighbourhood a shared view of Simba’s 2-1 comeback against Young Africans in the Kariakoo Derby. Yanga scored early at Uhuru stadium, then Simba hit back twice after the break. Simba’s win reshuffled the order at the top of the league table.

The SportPesa march coverage linked a local football gathering to a match that shaped the early league standings. Alongside the community screening, SportPesa Tanzania provides live football markets through its digital platform, where eligible adults can view available in-play betting options. Yanga held their one-goal lead through half-time, then Simba used the second half to take the match back with two strikes.

Yanga struck first, but Simba turned the match around

Peter Shalulile put Yanga ahead in the fifth minute after an attacking move involving Maxi Nzengeli, with more than 80 minutes still to play. Simba found no way back before the interval, so Yanga went in at half-time with a 1-0 lead. That left Simba the whole second half to recover.

Neo Maema equalised for Simba in the second half, and Elie Mpanzu then put them ahead with the winner. Both goals turned a one-goal deficit into a 2-1 victory. SportPesa’s match report on Simba’s comeback records the full sequence and a result that meant more for the title race.

“Football in Tanzania is about more than what happens inside the stadium. The Kariakoo Derby brings supporters together across communities, and our screening experience in Segerea was about bringing that shared passion closer to fans. Moments like Simba’s comeback show why local football continues to create such strong connections among supporters” said SportPesa Tanzania Head of Marketing Tracy Humplick.

The truck took the action to Segerea’s doorstep

The Segerea screening offered the match a viewing point other than Uhuru Stadium. The truck delivered the broadcast to the neighborhood so supporters could watch the same match together. The screen brought the action from the pitch to a local gathering while the outcome was still hanging in the balance.

Shared viewing changes the context in which people follow football. Everyone is watching the same game at the same time, so every goal and missed opportunity becomes something for the whole crowd to talk about as it happens. In Segerea, supporters came together for a domestic fixture that mattered to fans of both clubs.

Live bets moves with a changing match

SportPesa’s Live bets covers betting on a changing match once play starts, as the score and the clock keep moving. It differs from betting before the teams take the field. The encounter showed how the picture can shift. Yanga led at the interval, yet Simba ended the night with all three points.

Live football markets track a match that is still unfolding, rather than a final score. Segerea’s screening and SportPesa live betting covered two different sides of the same matchday. The truck showed supporters the game live, while Live bets handled the real time in-play betting.

Three clear points for Simba after the victory

Simba had not won a league meeting against Yanga since April 2023. Mpanzu’s winner ended a wait of three and a half years. Supporters in Segerea watched that wait end on a truck screen rather than from the stands.

The win lifted Simba to 21 points in the Tanzania Premier League, three clear of Yanga. A gap that size is small this early in the season, and one result can erase it. Yanga has plenty of matches left to do exactly that.

Conclusion

Simba’s 2-1 comeback against Yanga will be remembered for more than its impact on the NBC Premier League table. The result ended a league victory drought stretching back to April 2023. The SportPesa screening in Segerea gave local supporters a chance to experience the rivalry together, away from the stands at Uhuru Stadium.

For SportPesa Tanzania, the screening reflects the role football can play in connecting the brand with communities through shared sporting experiences. From Yanga’s early lead to Simba’s dramatic second-half turnaround, the Kariakoo Derby showed how one match can bring a neighbourhood together. It created memories that last beyond the final whistle.
