Police in Kasungu have arrested a primary school teacher who allegedly faked his death to have a bank loan written off, only to return to the same bank four years later seeking another loan.
The bank’s system reportedly flagged his new application because its records showed that he was already dead.
The man had allegedly submitted documents to the bank indicating that he had died after taking the loan.
The bank reportedly accepted the documents, expressed condolences to his family and subsequently cancelled the outstanding loan.
Four years later, the teacher returned to the bank and applied for another loan.
It was during the application process that the bank discovered that the person seeking the new loan was the same individual recorded in its system as deceased.
The matter was reported to police, who have since arrested him.
Kasungu Police spokesperson Miracle Hauli has confirmed the arrest but did not provide further details.
Police are expected to give more information on the case as investigations continue.
