JOHANNESBURG - Political parties are expected to sign the Electoral Commission of South Africa’s (IEC) Code of Conduct on Wednesday, ahead of the elections.

The signing will see parties putting pen to paper and committing to uphold the principles of free and fair elections.

The code requires political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct themselves responsibly throughout the electoral process.

The IEC will also conduct a ballot draw during the ceremony. The draw will determine the order in which political parties appear on the various ballot papers.

The signing comes after the IEC gazetted its Disinformation Code last week, as part of efforts to tackle the spread of false information ahead of the elections.

Under the code, political parties, candidates and anyone acting on their instructions will have 36 hours to correct false claims.
