Airbnb bars hosts from making guests wash dishes or strip beds from November 20

Airbnb has updated its house rules policy, barring hosts from requiring guests to wash dishes, strip beds, start laundry or remove garbage from the property before checking out, in a change that takes effect for all bookings made on or after November 20, 2026.

The update ends a long-standing source of frustration for travellers who paid cleaning fees only to receive a lengthy list of tasks to complete before leaving. It was announced in an email to hosts on Tuesday, October 21, 2026, stating that house rules had become “confusing, onerous and hard to manage” for guests.

Under the new policy, hosts are limited to selecting from seven standardised house rule categories, including smoking restrictions, pet policies, quiet hours, maximum overnight guests and lock-up procedures at checkout.

The prohibited tasks are specific. Hosts can no longer ask guests to wash and put away dishes, strip beds, start a load of laundry or take rubbish off the property. Simpler requests remain permitted. Guests can still be asked to place dirty dishes in the sink, gather used towels, sort recycling and dispose of garbage in designated containers on the property.

The policy also introduces a new transparency requirement. All checkout instructions must now appear alongside other house rules in a designated section of the listing before a reservation is confirmed.

Hosts are no longer permitted to introduce additional obligations through private messages, in-property notices or verbal instructions after a booking has been made. Guests also gain clearer protection against checkout-related fines.

Airbnb’s existing rules already prohibit hosts from charging guests simply for failing to complete specific chores, and the updated policy reinforces that position. Hosts who repeatedly violate the new rules could face warnings, reduced visibility in search results, or notices alerting potential guests to problems with their listings.

Airbnb’s hosts push back

The response from hosts has not been uniformly positive. Since the announcement, hundreds have raised objections on Airbnb’s community forum, with concerns largely centring on the ban on dishes.

Some hosts argue that leaving unwashed dishes overnight attracts pests before cleaning crews arrive the following morning. Others say the new policy pushes Airbnb closer to a hotel model, undermining the distinctive appeal of home rentals.

“Guests are given complete freedom to be lazy while the hosts bear the risk,” one host wrote on the forum. Two French hosts indicated they may leave the platform entirely over the change. Airbnb has outlined limited exceptions to the new rules. Hosts may still ask guests to conserve water during drought periods or use bear-proof rubbish containers in areas where wildlife poses a genuine risk.

The cleaning fee remains unchanged. Guests are still responsible for avoiding excessive mess and property damage. What the new policy removes is the expectation that paying guests should perform work typically handled by professional cleaning staff.

For travellers who have arrived at an Airbnb only to find a checkout list that rivals a full housekeeping shift, November 20 marks a significant shift in the platform’s relationship with both sides of its marketplace.
