The Member of Parliament for Berekum West, Dickson Kyere-Duah, has warned that Ghana risks losing the goodwill of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) if urgent action is not taken to address the deteriorating condition of the Accra Sports Stadium.Mr Kyere-Duah said CAF had been charitable by continuing to allow Ghana to use the venue for international matches despite concerns over its condition.His comments follow an inspection of the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday, 26 August, by members of the National Sports Authority (NSA), the Ghana Sports Fund Board and representatives from Parliament.The inspection comes at a critical time for Ghanaian football, with the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers approaching, Ghana set to host the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations and the new Ghana Premier League season due to begin in the coming weeks.Mr Kyere-Duah, who was part of the inspection team, said the stadium had reached a stage where demolition and reconstruction should be seriously considered.He warned that Ghana could eventually run out of credit with CAF if the authorities failed to address the facility's problems."In our last qualifiers, CAF initially rejected this venue, so we went to Togo and other neighbouring countries. It took diplomatic manoeuvring to eventually get us to play our games here at the Accra Sports Stadium."I dont think CAF will be charitable this time around if we leave the facility in this state."The MP called for an urgent national discussion on the future of the stadium, arguing that delaying a decision could create further problems for Ghana's international football programme."We need to do a lot more about this facility, and we should start having a conversation about the stadium as soon as possible," he added.The Accra Sports Stadium has undergone several renovations and refurbishments since it was opened, with successive upgrades aimed at addressing safety concerns and ensuring the venue meets international standards.However, concerns about its current condition have intensified as Ghana prepares to host major domestic and international football events.The stadium's future is therefore likely to become an increasingly important issue for the government and sports authorities as Ghana seeks to secure suitable venues for upcoming CAF and FIFA competitions.
