The North Central zonal director, Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), Mr Steve Aluko, has blamed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for not carrying out enough publicity or sensitisation on the need for the general public to go to their registered area centres (RACs) for claims and objections to collect their permanent voter cards (PVCs).
In an exclusive interview with LEADERSHIP Friday in Jos, the Plateau State capital, Aluko insisted that inadequate publicity and sensitisation were the reasons for the low turnout of the general public during the exercise, which ended yesterday.
“From the reports I got from most states, the exercise witnessed a very low turnout of Nigerians. This development is not healthy as we prepare for the general elections in just two month,” he said.
Aluko challenged INEC to do everything within its power to sensitise the electorate to ensure they obtain their permanent voter cards, they will not be able to exercise their franchise in the 2027 general election.
“The traditional, religious and political leaders should be mobilised and sensitise their subjects on this very important exercise before the day of the general election.
“Ahead of the 2027 general elections, all hands must be on deck by stakeholders to do the needful by sensitising Nigerians by ensuring that they collect their PVCs if they really mean well for our country, Nigeria, Aluko said.
In Plateau State, our correspondent gathered that 101,995 PVCs remain uncollected across the State. Over one hundred thousand citizens are currently unable to vote unless they claim their physical cards before the 2027 general elections
LEADERSHIP observed empty collection desks across key Registration Area Centres, such as Giring in Jos South and the Zawan RCM Primary School.
