Julius Malema’s Own Words Come Back To Bite Him Ahead Of 2026 Election
Kallie Kriel, chief executive officer of civil rights organisation AfriForum, has questioned the credibility of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and its leader, Julius Malema, following the party’s latest promise to build a modern, 24-hour healthcare clinic in Tembisa ahead of the upcoming local government elections.
Kriel challenged the feasibility of the proposed healthcare facility by referring to an earlier commitment Malema made in 2019. During the EFF’s national elective conference, Malema promised that the party would establish a privately operated school in Alexandra to provide educational opportunities for underprivileged children within five years.
At the time, Malema reportedly told delegates and supporters that voters should refuse to re-elect the EFF if the party failed to fulfil its promise. However, more than six years have passed since the announcement, and the school has yet to materialise, according to the claims raised by Kriel.
The AfriForum chief cited the unfulfilled commitment as a reason for questioning whether the EFF would deliver on its latest infrastructure proposal. He argued that political parties should be evaluated based on their ability to implement promises rather than relying on ambitious announcements during election campaigns.
The controversy comes as political parties intensify their campaigns in Gauteng, particularly in townships such as Alexandra and Tembisa, where residents continue to face challenges involving healthcare access, overcrowded facilities, inadequate educational infrastructure and strained municipal services.
Tembisa’s proposed 24-hour clinic could address some healthcare concerns if implemented, particularly for residents who require medical attention outside normal operating hours. However, the project’s feasibility will depend on practical considerations, including funding, staffing, equipment and the availability of suitable facilities.
Meanwhile, the debate surrounding the promised Alexandra school highlights the importance of accountability in South African politics. Voters increasingly expect political organisations to provide clear timelines, funding plans and measurable progress on major development projects.
Although Kriel’s criticism raises questions about the EFF’s previous commitments, the party’s latest healthcare proposal would ultimately need to be assessed through its implementation plans and actual progress. As the local government elections approach, the exchange underscores the importance of examining campaign promises against previous commitments and tangible results.
